Biography

Ulrich Zähringer obtained his PhD degree in 1979 with H Grisebach, Biochemistry of Plants, Freiburg University, Germany. In 1981 he moved with Prof. Ernst T Rietschel, Director at the Research Center Borstel, where he obtained a tenure position as head of the Division of Immunochemistry. He made three postdoctoral trainings: i) 1980-1981 in O Lüderitz’s Lab at the Max-Planck-Institute for Immunobiology, Freiburg; ii) 1983-1984 at T Shiba’s and S Kusumoto’s Lab, University of Osaka, Faculty of Sciences, Osaka, Japan, and iii) during 2004-2005 with S Grzesiek, NMR Structural Biology at the Biozentrum in Basel, Switzerland. In 1996 he finished his habilitation and promoted in 2002 as extraordinary Professor at the University of Lübeck till his retirement in 2012. He published more than 250 papers in peer-reviews journals and 55 reviews.

Research Interest

His major interests are the analysis of structure-function relationship of pro-inflammatory bacterial compounds, such as lipopolysaccharide (LPS), oligosaccharides, lipopeptides, lipoteichoic acids (LTA) and peptidoglycan (PGN).
